Question by Maya Shenofi: A stained glass memorial window is to be made for a Church. The basic design will be of six square panes of st?
A stained glass memorial window is to be made for a Church. The basic design will be of six square panes of stained glass set in a frame. The size of each pane of glass is not yet known- it will depend on how much the window costs to make and how much money there is to pay for it. But the outside border of the frame will be 10 cm wide and inside parts of the frame will be 5 cm wide. This is all shown in the drawing below (NOT TO SCALE!). With the panes of glass marked as x cm by x cm.

£ 325 has been left to the Church to pay for the window. If the window costs any more than that , the extra money will have to come from the general parish contingency fund. The cost of the window is determined by area. The stained glass costs £ 150 per m2 , which works out at 1.5 p per cm2 . The framing is much cheaper at £ 2.50 per m2 or 0.025 p per cm2. Your task here is to estimate how big a window the Church can afford with the money it has. How big should x be?
