In the 1950’s the First Assembly of God congregation worshiped at two locations. This is the larger of the two worship halls. in the rear are two buildings used for Sunday school, meetings or other activities. It was likely here that Elvis attended singing practice with the Blackwood Brothers Gospel Quartet. Sometime in 1953 he auditioned for the Quartet’s teenage group, the Songfellows, but was turned down. They said that he could not blend his voice with the other group members. Elvis would tease them about that in later years. It was also likely here that Elvis met Dixie Locke, who was his girlfriend for part of 1954 and 1955. Today Dixie Locke Emmons is still a leader at the First Assembly of God which is now in Cordova, an eastern suburb of Memphis.
