I guess stained glass windows have been around since there were churches or other houses of meeting for religious purposes. I have seen stained glass in the windows of synagogues and I think you will find stained glass windows on mosques.
They do not add to the liturgy, other than on the day the windows are dedicated.
What they do is ‘memorialize’ those who donated the funds to have the window constructed and installed. Usually those wanting to donate for a window (usually a family and/or group of friends of someone who was (usually after the person’s death) an active member of the particular community of faith will meet with a committee to discuss what design and in what window frame the stained glass will be installed. There will be a plaque or even notation on the window itself memorializing this gift. In this way the family/friends see the person being memorialized as remaining a part of worship even though physically they may no longer be among us.
I hope you find this helpful.

There are many links that speak to how stained glass came to be used by churches, but this link speaks of the importance of stained glass to the church. It is written by a high school senior and I think you might find it helpful:
