Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat [VHS]

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat [VHS]

  • Condition: Used – Good

Following the successful 1998 video release of Cats comes another Andrew Lloyd Webber blockbuster musical, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and it’s a savvy choice. It hasn’t been represented on film before, it’s short enough (78 minutes) to present without cuts, and it has the star power of former teen icon Donny Osmond, who played over 1,800 performances across North America. Rather than record a live performance, Cats director David Mallet conceived Joseph as a film, though one that is based strongly on codirector Steven Pimlott’s 1991 London revival and relies more on camerawork than venturing beyond its stagelike sets.

Lloyd Webber’s first project with lyricist Tim Rice was originally written in 1968 as a school cantata; accordingly, this film uses a framing sequence of a school recital, with an audience of clapping, singing kids and members of the faculty playing the roles. The Old Testament tale of Joseph and his coat of many colors gets a splashy, vigorous treatment with an energetic cast, Las Vegas-style glitz, and catchy, eclectic songs, including “Any Dream Will Do,” “Close Every Door,” the peppy “Go, Go, Go Joseph,” and various bits of country, calypso, and Elvis. Osmond is perfect in the title role, with a strong voice and winning persona, while London stage veteran Maria Friedman performs well in the central role of the narrator. Richard Attenborough appears (and sings a little) as Jacob, and Joan Collins makes a brief, nonsinging cameo.

Joseph certainly isn’t revolutionary musical theater, but if you view it as a kids’ show, it’s a silly good time (though there are poignant moments too). Parents should note, however, that this production might warrant a little discretion due to one suggestive scene and some risqué costumes. –David Horiuchi

The Amazing Church – Lessons For Football Marketing

The Amazing Church – Lessons For Football Marketing

The church and religion never seize to amaze me. If most businesses would learn how the church deals with people we would not see their frequent closures as we are witnessing these days.

In the city in which I reside Pretoria, the central business district is about to have more churches than businesses. Businesses are closing shop and in many of the spaces they leave charismatic churches are sprouting. These churches seem to survive the high rentals that in the first place have driven most of the businesses out or pushed them under.

To survive the churches must surely be doing something correct. They are riding out the hard times far better than business and possibly understand human psychology better.

One of my relatives had an assignment in Durban, a city five hundred or so kilometers from Pretoria, while there she decided to go to one of the churches within her vicinity for a Sunday service. She received a letter from the church hardly a week on her return, thanking her for making time to be with them in praising the lord.

An invitation was sent out to her to join them again should she find herself in Durban.

You can bet which church she will go to should she find herself in Durban again. You can also bet if some one she knows from Pretoria is to go down to Durban, which church she will recommend.

But she did not go to Durban to expressly attend that church. She went there for work related activities. She stayed in a bed and breakfast. She also patronized several shops while in Durban. Amazingly none of those businesses she patronized took time to know her. And since they did not find time to know her none has taken time to send a thank you note like the church. But without a doubt she spent more money in shops than the church! For sure she will forever remember the church but will have a hazy memory of the shops and bed and breakfast she patronized.

I think you can see from that true story why the churches are taking over Pretoria and businesses are either closing or moving to cheaper rental areas.

Football is in the same boat as other businesses in South Africa. Football from my vintage point does not seem to know how to deal with fans. For football clubs to succeed they must do what the church does as narrated above. Your club must know its fans and acknowledge them. A simple thank you letter can create a word of mouth evangelist for your club.

Watch the church and learn how they deal with people. If you mimic what they do in no time your fan base will grow in leaps and bounds. And more importantly you will get active fans who will share in your success and failure.

Amazing Grace

Amazing Grace

From the makers of Ray, AMAZING GRACE tells the inspiring story of William Wilberforce and his passion and perseverance to pass a law ending the slave trade in the late 18th century. Several friends, including Wilberforce’s minister, a reformed slave ship captain who penned the beloved hymn Amazing Grace, urge him to see the cause through. In this inspirational costume drama, Michael Apted (49 Up) recounts a period in British history sure to be unfamiliar to most Americans. In fact, his eye-opening biography of 18th century abolitionist William Wilberforce (Ioan Gruffudd) is likely to come as a revelation to many Britons, as well. After all, despite the presence of his wife, Barbara (Romola Garai), this isn’t a particularly “sexy” story, but it is a powerful one. The title comes from John Newton’s hymn “Amazing Grace” (“I once was lost but now am found”). Newton (Albert Finney) was a former slaveholder, who became a clergyman and spent his days repenting. While America had John Brown, England had Wilberforce, and Newton is one of many who helped the MP to abolish slavery in the UK. The story begins towards the end of Wilberforce’s mission when he’s sick with colitis and addicted to laudanum. Apted continues to alternate between 1797 and 1789, when Wilberforce was fitter and more idealistic, and ends in 1807 as his efforts come to fruition. Apted and writer Steven Knight (Dirty Pretty Things) do right by their hero. Unlike Amistad, however, slaves are largely off-screen, with the exception of author Equiano (Senegalese vocalist Youssou N’Dour). Amazing Grace reserves its focus for the politicians who risked their reps for the greater good, like Wilberforce and Prime Minister Pitt (an excellent Benedict Cumberbatch), and those more concerned with the income slavery provided their constituents, like Lord Tarleton (Ciarán Hinds) and the Duke of Clarence (Toby Jones). –Kathleen C.
